6 Arthritis Remedies to Try at Home

At-Home Senior Arthritis Remedies

Mobility and ease of motion are both things that younger people take for granted. The Palm Harbor live-in care experts at Home Care Assistance know, however, as we age we may find our motion and mobility limited by painful arthritis.

In honor of Arthritis Awareness Month, here are six home remedies that help treat arthritic hands for seniors who want to naturally supplement prescription medications.

1. Rub it in

When applied topically, eucalyptus, wintergreen and capsaicin pepper oils are known to alleviate some painful osteoarthritis symptoms. Use with caution. Some people find aromatic oils irritating to the skin, and be careful not to get any oil in your eyes or your senior loved one’s eyes.

2. Wrap ’em up

Wearing a pair of snug-fitting cloth gloves to bed can alleviate aches and improve quality of sleep. Apply eucalyptus, capsaicin or wintergreen oil to hands before slipping into a pair of gloves for the night.

3. Cool it down

Active inflammation may be reduced with icy cold compresses. Place crushed ice in a plastic zip bag, and wrap the whole thing with a washcloth. Apply for five minutes, remove for two minutes, and then reapply as needed.

4. Try turmeric tea

Many seniors with arthritis swear by tea made with ginger root and turmeric. This makes sense, because turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties, and ginger is known to increase circulation.

5. Reach for nature’s aspirin

Natural willow bark tea or capsules closely emulate aspirin. Find willow bark at your local health food store or from a trusted online provider.

6. Go for something fishy

Omega-rich fish oils are known to suppress symptoms of painful joints. Eat more salmon and tuna, or add a fish oil supplement to your loved one’s daily diet.
