How to Cook Sugar-Free Halloween Snacks for Elderly in Tampa Bay, FL

Consider gathering the family together to help seniors prepare some easy-to-make treats this Halloween. Choose a number of sweet and savory recipes that seniors and their in-home Clearwater caregivers can quickly prepare together like the ones listed below.

Bloody Punch

In a pitcher, combine the wedges of three oranges with a bottle of cranberry juice and a quart of orange juice. Add a few blueberries or peeled grapes for eyeballs. The recipe makes enough to satisfy the thirst of eight “vampires”.

Spicy Bat Wings

Create a Halloween version of Buffalo wings using a combination of orange marmalade and a touch of hot sauce. Coat each chicken wing and place on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Brush more of the marmalade mixture on top and bake at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes. Baste the wings again and bake for another 15 minutes.

Chocolate Eyeballs

Melt white and dark chocolate in microwavable bowls or glass measuring cups. Dip donut holes in the white chocolate and center a colorful, candy-coated chocolate like M&Ms in the center of each. Using a toothpick, create the pupil with the dark chocolate.

Freaky Fingers

Wrap cocktail frankfurters or quartered hot dogs with thin slices of croissant dough. However, make sure that the tip of the wiener peeks out from one end. Bake according to the dough package instructions. Use ketchup or cocktail sauce for dipping the “dismembered fingers”.

Ice Scream Eyeballs

Scoop balls of vanilla ice cream onto a waxed paper lined baking sheet. Freeze until firm. Drizzle strawberry or raspberry sauce from the top and down the sides of each treat. Top each with a colored, candy-coated chocolate. Use black icing gel to create the pupils.

Black Widow Treats

Make crispy rice cereal treats using marshmallows and chocolate-flavored rice cereal. Make large balls for each body and smaller balls for the spider heads. Insert black licorice strands for legs and use jellybeans or M&Ms for the eyes. Cut hourglass shapes from red fruit leather for the classic telltale black widow symbol.
